Leaving Belfast, you’ll embark on the Antrim Coastal Drive, or the Causeway Coastal Route, which takes you through nine enchanting glens. A “glen” is a narrow valley, often nestled between hills or mountains. Each glen has its unique character and charm, while the drive overlooks the picturesque villages and historical sites tucked along the way.
As you journey through Glenarm, you’ll encounter one of Northern Ireland’s oldest towns, home to Glenarm Castle and its charming walled garden. Next, Carnlough offers a small bay and maritime scenery, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a warm cup of tea.
Glenariff, often called the “Queen of the Glens,” is renowned for its stunning waterfalls and lush forest park. Glenballyeamon, with its sweeping landscapes, offers a tranquil retreat. Onto Glenaan, where folklore and history intertwine, with tales of ancient legends adding to the charm.
In Cushendun, designed by Clough Williams-Ellis, the Cornish-style houses and lush surroundings give it a Victorian-era feel. Approaching Ballycastle, you’ll find a gateway to the stunning Causeway Coast. This bustling town is the perfect prelude to the spectacle that is the Giant’s Causeway.
The Majestic Giant’s Causeway
No journey along the Antrim coast is complete without a visit to the Giant’s Causeway. This natural wonder, consisting of approximately 40,000 interlocking basalt columns created by volcanic activity millions of years ago, is nothing short of breathtaking.
