(B & D)

        DINNER: Local Restaurant

        OVERNIGHT: Giulio Cesare Hotel, Rome

        Mon, Oct 16

This afternoon we'll leave Rome to journey into the Monti Tiburtini hills, passing through the area's travertine marble quarries.  Just as holidaying Romans did for centuries before us, we'll stop in the hilltop village of  Tivoli.  Marvel at the breathtaking waterfalls, gardens, and fountains of Villa d'Este, the home of Lucrezia Borgia's son.  Once back in Rome, you'll return to your hotel and enjoy a free evening, perhaps spent cozying up to the locals in a charming little Roman trattoria. (B)

        OVERNIGHT: Giulio Cesare Hotel, Rome

        Tues, Oct 17

An early morning start to our day leads to one of the highlights of the trip - our before-hours tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel.  You'll avoid the long lines and the usual crowds found later in the day, so that you can truly savor the experience and explore the Vatican's unparalleled treasures at your own pace.  Tour the Candelabra Gallery, Map Gallery, and the Tapestries; in the Sistine Chapel, gaze up in awe at Michelangelo's masterpiece ceiling - and contemplate all that you see in sacred silence, as the artist intended.  You'll have the rest of the day free to discover all the Eternal City has to offer.  Use the time to visit the Roman wonders that most interest you, from busling markets and squares to centuries-old antiquities and fountains.  (B)

        OVERNIGHT: Giulio Cesare Hotel, Rome

        Wed, Oct 18

Arise early this morning to arrive at St. Peter's Square and experience the Papal Audience.  Your guide will lead you to your reserved seat and then share with you in-depth insight into the history and traditions of the Papal Audience ceremony so you can fully appreciate the wonder of this moment, when Pope Francis I takes the stage along with his Cardinals.  Understanding the deep history of such a sacred event will add a richness to this unforgettable experience.  As the event begins, Pope Francis will give a special greeting.  Then, with the help of his Cardinals, he will perform blessings in many languages, sing hymns and give homilies.  Crowds for the Papal Audience have sometimes reached 100,000 since the election of Pope Francis I, with people traveling from all around the world to attend.  Papal Audiences have become a spirited event, thanks to Pope Francis's reputation for interacting with his audience much more than popes before him.  Get swept up in this energetic display of faith, with grateful crowds praying and singing along, as you bear witness to a truly touching event not to be missed by any visitor to Rome.

*Papal audiences are subject to last minute changes based upon the Holy Father's schedule.

After the Papal Audience, we'll depart Rome toward Assisi.  Soak in the classic Italian scenery along the way as the rustic countryside of Lazio gives way to the lush, undulating hills of Umbria. St. Francis of Assisi may be the most well loved saint in Italy - and perhaps even in the world.  His birthplace, Assisi, is one of the most beautiful cities in the country, infused with a mystical, medieval spirit.  We'll celebrate Mass and enjoy a guided tour of St. Francis Basilica, with the Tomb of St. Francis, and Basilica of St. Clare.  Continue on to settle into our Tuscan villa, which we'll call home for the next several days.  Tonight, indulge in a delectable dinner with wine at our villa hotel. (B & D)

DINNER & OVERNIGHT: Villa Cappugi, Tuscany

        Thurs, Oct 19

Today we travel back in time to a UNESCO World Heritage Site - Medieval Siena.  We visit the famous Piazza del Campo, one of Europe's most enchanting medieval squares and the site of the gripping Palio horse race.  We'll stop by Palazzo Pubblico, Siena's town hall, and then venture to the awe-inspiring Duomo (cathedral) which features one of the most intricate mosaic tile floors in Italy.

A wine tasting and lunch at a local Tuscan winery will revive us before we embark on a drive through the endless rolling hills of Chianti, a famed wine region, and then to medieval San Gimignano, a hill town in Tuscany that's still encircled today by impressive 13th-century walls.  Return to our villa hotel for a free evening. (B & L)

        OVERNIGHT: Villa Cappugi, Tuscany

        Fri, Oct 20

Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance - where the world's greatest artists, poets, and rulers flourished! From atop Piazzale Michelangelo, take in a sweeping panorama of the city, followed by a tour of the majestic Cathedral built in 1296.  View Giotto's Bell Tower and the Baptistery, with its Gates of Paradise doors, and then visit the Accademia Gallery, the location of Michelangelo's inimitable David.  After a lifetime viewing the world-famous statue in history and art books, your jaw will drop when you get your first glance of David. The imposing stone statue seems to undulate with life, David's proud, steely gaze peering out over the crowd that's undoubtedly gathered beneath him.  An incredible creation, from the mind and hands of a genius.  After encountering David, we'll follow the twisting streets of Florence to the Piazza della Signoria, a gorgeous square of elegant proportions, and then on to Santa Croce, a quietly compelling Franciscan church built in 1294.  This burial place of 270 of the city's most famous (and infamous) inhabitants - among them Galileo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Rossini - also houses delicate frescos by Giotto.  In the cloister next door we see the Pazzi Chapel, considered one of the most dazzling early Renaissance creations.  Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Florence further.  Enjoy dinner at our Tuscany villa. (B & D)

DINNER AND OVERNIGHT: Villa Cappugi, Tuscany

        Sat, Oct 21

Depart Tuscany in the morning for a spectacular drive to Modena, where you'll enjoy a gourmet lunch composed f local specialties and an artisanal balsamic vinegar tasting.  Continue toward Venice and stop in Padua to visit the imposing bronze works of Donatello at the Basilica of St. Anthony.  St. Anthony, the patron Saint of lost objects, is interred in the serene Basilica, which dates back to the 1200s.  Priceless frescos by Giotto are yours to gaze on as we visit the Scrovegni Chapel (Cappella degli Scrovegni).  A breathtaking drive through the forested Apennine Hills ends in Venice, a gleaming city on water full of art, romance, and mystery.  Enter in style by private boat for a view of the Grand Canal as you arrive at your hotel. (B & L)

        OVERNIGHT: Hotel Cavalleto, Venice

        Sun, Oct 22

This morning meet your guide for a walking tour of three of Venice's finest landmarks: St. Mark's Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs, and a visit inside the Doge's Palace.

At St. Mark's Square, your guide will recount the storied history of the basilica as he escorts you inside.  The current incarnation of the church has been endlessly modified, reflecting the city's evolving power and wealth, since it first served as a mausoleum and private chapel.  Once inside, admire St. Mark's gilded and glittering treasures.  Take note of the rich Byzantine mosaics, which cover nearly 11,000 square feet inside of the basilica.  Continue on to the Gothic-styled Doge's Palace, which functioned as residence, government seat and palace of justice for over a thousand years. After touring the palace's grand design and furnishings, continue to the Bridge of Sighs, leading to the grim prison across a canal.

Use your free afternoon and evening to wander the city's labyrinth of canals, bridges, and piazzas.  Don't worry if you get lost; being a small island, it's impossible to stray very far in Venice!

Enjoy dinner on your own tonight.  Your guide will happily make suggestions for intimate restos that line the narrow passageways of the island. (B)

        OVERNIGHT: Hotel Cavalleto, Venice

        Mon, Oct 23

This morning, continue to explore Venice on your own.

In the afternoon, we'll board our motoscafi to cruise to the most fascinating islands near Venice - Murano and Burano.  Join your motor launch at the pier to travel to Murano, where you'll get an inside look at the island's glass manufacturing, a celebrated industry since 1291.  Visit the workshop of a leading glass factory to watch the gripping process of turning molten glass into multi-colored masterpieces.  Afterwards, we'll tour a display room with pieces ranging from relatively inexpensive to intricate - and pricey - mirrors, chandeliers, and decorative art pieces.  Next, we'll jet off to the nearby island of Burano, know for 'punto in aria' lace. Some of Burano's women still produce lacework today, following the patterns and processes established centuries ago.  Linger during a visit to a lace shop for a demonstration of this ancient art - which combines precision with pure artistry.  Afterwards, we'll regroup for a farewell dinner of delectable Venetian specialties.  After exploring both islands, you'll re-board your motor launch and return to St. Mark's Square or our hotel for your last evening in Italy. (B & D)

        DINNER: Local Restaurant, Burano

        OVERNIGHT: Hotel Cavalleto, Venice

        Tues, Oct 24
